Prayers of Salvation

The reasons for repentance

God loves us. John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” He wants each person to have a relationship with Him. Because He is a holy and just being, rightly so, He condemns sin. God sent is son to die on the cross for our sins. In order to have a relationship with Him we must confess our sins. 1 John 1:9 reminds us that, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” God desires to show mercy. Daniel 9:9 states, “The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.” The way we receive mercy and forgiveness is by acknowledging our sin.

Confession of our sins should be accompanied by repentance. The word repent means to change the mind, to turn around. This is a turning away from our sin toward God. John the Baptist (Matthew 3:1-3), Jesus (Matthew 4:17), and later the disciples (Acts 3:19) preached the call to repent from sins and turn to God. Proverbs 28:13 promises mercy for those who confess and renounce their sin. The message of the gospel of Christ is a call for people to repent of their sins to receive the grace of God, resulting in eternal life in heaven. 1 Peter 1:3-5 reminds us of this promise, “[p]raise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” Below are sample prayers of of salvation and repentance to assist you in praying to accept Christ as your savior or return to Him if you feel you have gone astray.

Option 1

You can accept Christ by simply saying, Jesus, I am a sinner and I need you to forgive me of my sins (the times I do things I should not do or say things that I should not say). Please come into my heart. I believe you died on the cross for my sins. Please change my heart and be with me to live in and through me (Galatians 2:20). I want to live for you and love you. Amen.

Option 2

Forgive me Lord ; I am lost. I am a sinner in need of a savior. I am un-righteous. Make me in right standing with you today. I believe you lived a perfect life and  died a sinners' death. I believe you  rose from the grave on the third day.  Today I place my faith in the one and only Jesus the Christ. In your holy name amen.

A prayer of repentance … Returning to Walk with The Lord

O Lord, I humbly acknowledge that I've fallen short of your perfect will. I am truly sorry for my sin, and I repent. I turn away from living my life for me to living it for you. Please grant me the forgiveness made possible by Jesus’ death and resurrection and wash away the sin that separates me from you. Strengthen my heart and mind daily to turn away from those actions and desires that dishonor your name. Guide me by your Holy Spirit to live a life that reflects your love and grace from this day forward.

A Poetic Form of Repentance Prayer…Returning to the Lord:

O Lord, I humbly stand before Your grace,
To own the times I missed Your perfect place;
My sin I see, and with a sorry heart,
I truly repent and choose a brand new start.

I turn from self, where I once ruled alone,
To live my life for You, upon Your throne.

Please grant the pardon Jesus bought for me,
Through death and rising—setting my soul free;
Wash clean the fault that keeps our spirits two,
And make my weary, sin-stained heart brand new.

Strengthen my mind and heart with might each day,
To turn from all that steps outside Your way;
From actions, deeds, and desires deep inside,
That brings You shame, where honor should abide.

Guide me, Holy Spirit, day by day,
To walk in truth and never stray;
That all my life, from this new moment on,
May reflect Your love until the day is done.
